Background

Rodney Helliwell obtained an honours degree in forestry in 1961, with forest soils as his optional subject. After two years in private forestry he returned to the University of Wales, where he spent 12 months undertaking research into factors affecting the natural regeneration of sycamore. He then worked for Staffordshire County Planning Department for three years before joining a new section of the Nature Conservancy, where he was concerned with the effects of major changes in land use on the conservation value of flora and fauna.

When the Nature Conservancy was re-organised in 1973, Mr Helliwell transferred to the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, where he continued his research into the growth of trees and herbs on different soils, and carried out surveys of woodland and montane vegetation.

In 1978 he became an independent consultant, since when he has carried out a variety of survey and advisory work in forestry, ecology, and arboriculture. He acted as terrestrial ecology consultant to the Channel Tunnel Project from 1985 to 1996, and has undertaken numerous surveys of trees, woodlands, and other vegetation and problems related to these, throughout the United Kingdom and occasionally elsewhere.
